Set up Upstash MCP in Claude Code

Create and manage Upstash serverless Redis databases, list keys, run commands, and interact with your Upstash account using natural language.

1

Locate the config file

Claude Code reads MCP server configuration from the following file:

~/.claude.json

Create this file if it does not already exist.

2

Add the configuration

You can configure Upstash MCP using the CLI command or by editing the config file directly.

Option A: CLI command

bash
claude mcp add upstash-mcp -e UPSTASH_EMAIL=YOUR_UPSTASH_EMAIL -e UPSTASH_API_KEY=YOUR_UPSTASH_API_KEY -- npx -y @upstash/mcp-server@latest

Option B: Config file

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upstash-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@upstash/mcp-server@latest"
      ],
      "env": {
        "UPSTASH_EMAIL": "YOUR_UPSTASH_EMAIL",
        "UPSTASH_API_KEY": "YOUR_UPSTASH_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}
3

Set up environment variables
