Set up Jina Reader MCP in Claude Code

Convert URLs to LLM-friendly markdown, perform web and image searches, and generate embeddings using the Jina AI Reader API.

Locate the config file

Claude Code reads MCP server configuration from the following file:

~/.claude.json

Create this file if it does not already exist.

Add the configuration

You can configure Jina Reader MCP using the CLI command or by editing the config file directly.

Option A: CLI command

Set up environment variables

Jina Reader MCP requires the following environment variables:

JINA_API_KEYRequired

Jina AI API key for authentication

Verify it works

Restart Claude Code. Jina Reader MCP should appear in your MCP server list with 8 tools available.

This server adds approximately 4,120 tokens to your context window for tool definitions.
